The Withings Smart Baby Monitor is nearing release

As you probably know, Withings has been working for some time on a new product: the Smart Baby Monitor. The release date is now drawing close and in the coming weeks we will unveil more and more features of this great product.

The basic function of the Smart Baby Monitor is of course to let you watch your baby. For this purpose, it comes equipped with a high-resolution, wide angle camera and a high-quality microphone.

The first area where the Smart Baby Monitor innovates is that it connects directly to your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch. With a dedicated, free application that will be available with the release of the product, you will be able to watch your baby at any time. The connection is secured with a login and password that you can choose to keep or share with others and several people can access the feed at the same time.

We haven’t set an exact release date yet but the Smart Baby Monitor will be available for purchase in Withings and other stores well in time for the holiday season. You can subscribe to the mailing list to receive an e-mail as soon as the product is available.

    1. Will the wifi for the baby monitor work with 802.11n and 5GHz networks?
    2. Does the monitor work in the dark (say, using infrared)?

    Hi Julien,

    From the look of your product photo, there are no signs of any infrared LED’s for night vision, does this mean your monitor cannot work in a dark room?

    Hi Amitabh, The Smart Baby Monitor functions on 802.11n, but it won’t work on 5GHz. The camera switches to infrared light when the room is dark and at night time! Hope this answered your question!

    This sounds like a great product from the description. Hopefully consumers we will be able to get some hands on experience with this soon. I had a couple of questions:

    1. The product description says the camera is directly linked to iphone, ipad, or ipod touch. I assume, though, that it will also be generally internet compatible so you can log into the video feed from any computer?
    2. Is there a timeout on the camera? One of the things that other cameras have struggled with is they have an auto-timeout feature that shuts down the camera. This is obviously problematic for a baby monitor.

    Just from the FEW pictures of the camera, it does not look like there are clips on the camera to clip it to the crib? Does the camera piece have this capability or is it something you must put on a flat surface?

    Hi Vince, you will be able to monitor your child from a computer evetually, but this feature won’t be available immediately when the Baby Monitor is released. It will not turn off automatically unless if it’s not connected to the charger or if the internal battery reaches the end of its autonomy.

    A couple quick questions…

    Will this device work on the Android platform? For us non iPhone people? I’m really interested in this device but I’m not going to buy an iPhone just to use it.

    I’m having twins, is there a way to monitor 2 of these devices remotely?

    Hi Joe, we developed the product to be compatible with the iPhone because we think it’s more suitable with our product, but we are considering developing an Android application. As for your second question, It will be possible to use two Smart Baby Monitors with one phone. You simply create a user account for each and go from one to another on the application. However, the SBM has a wide-angle camera and high resolution with a zoom, so it will be possible to monitor two babies in the same room with a single unit if you position it well. A release in time for Christmas may still occur, but we cannot commit to it. If not the release will be in January. We apologize for the inconvenience.
