The Smart Baby Monitor comes to the US rich with new features

Last week, the Smart Baby Monitor was finally released in the US. We have already talked at length about the main product features and you can always find them all described in detail on our website, so the purpose of this article will be to focus on the new features we have added since the monitor was launched in Europe in November 2011.

You can now set a timer for 3, 15, 30 or 60 minutes

-          Better image quality in low-light. When lighting conditions are normal, the Smart Baby Monitor displays a full-color image. When it gets dark, it switches to a black-and-white infrared picture. We have improved what happens in-between to offer a crisp, clear color image even with dim lighting.

-          An additional lullaby. After the poll we made on the blog, Beethoven’s For Elise was chosen as the fifth lullaby you can play to baby.

-          Lullaby and night light timer. You can now put a timer on the night light, the lullaby playback or both together. Touch the lullaby and night light buttons on the main screen several times to cycle through the different options.

-          Rainbow-style night light. You can set the night light to cycle through all colors indefinitely instead of setting just one.

Switch on the "rainbow" setting to bring a little more color to baby's room.

All those features are available to users of the Smart Baby Monitor everywhere. Be sure to keep the WithBaby app up to date to enable them. We’ll continue to work to add even more functionalities to the monitor, including the Android compatibility that we know many people are expecting.

What about you, is there any particular feature you’d like to see?

Hi. When is the Android app coming out. I am trying to hold off in purchasing my monitor, but I need the Android app. Can you advise please…..

    thanks

    Paul

A lower price? Would love to get one, but $299 is too much.

  • http://blog.withings.com/ Withings

Hi Paul, we are actually working on creating an Android app but we can not give you a release date at the moment… We will keep you posted !

  • http://blog.withings.com/ Withings

Hi, the Smart Baby Monitor is not just another baby monitor. It packs the best technology and a unique number of functionalities into a carefully studied design.
You should know that the price includes not just the device, but also access to many associated services for your comfort and that of the baby, such as constant audio and video stream (high-resolution, wide-angle image and clear sound), Pan & Tilt Zoom to move around the room, interactions with baby (talk to the child, play a lullaby, turn on the nightlight…) and many more ! The simplicity of use and the quality of the components make the Smart Baby Monitor a first-rate product. To learn more visit our website http://www.withings.com/smartbabymonitor.

  • Daniel B

How is the smart baby monitor a Pan Tilt Zoom camera? I can see you may offer Digital Pan Tilt Zoom, but the Withings cannot look around the room? Or am I mistaken?

  • Matthew Hoenigsberg

I am getting a wifi configuration error when trying to connect to wifi. There is no direction in Faqs to resolve… Help!!

  • http://blog.withings.com/ Withings

Hello Daniel. Actually, with the Pan-Tilt-Zoom technology you can virtually move around the baby’s room. You just have to slide your finger like you would on a web page to get a full view of your child’s safety

well nice to hear that and thanks for this awesome article.

  • Juanpa74

I was getting Wifi configuration error too. My wifi security was WEP. I disabled security on my Wifi network and it worked. Then set security to WPA and also worked. Not sure but might be the baby monitor doesn´t work on WEP secured wireless network. Hard to say when this information is nowhere to be found on withings web or baby monitor user guide. They have also a Forum but is totally restricted. They should create a sub-forum for users.
Let us know if that helps.

  • bubbus

Is it possible to purchase a 2nd camera for a different room and have both accessible on the WithBaby app at the same time or interchangeably?

Also, is there a return policy for purchasing this through the website or through Amazon?

  • http://blog.withings.com/ Withings

Hi Matthew, we are sorry your experiencing problems. We will pass on your message to our customer service so that you can have a response as soon as possible. Could you also please check your spam folder? Thank you for your message!

  • http://blog.withings.com/ Withings

Hi, it is possible to use two Smart Baby Monitors with one phone. You simply create a user account for each and go from one to another on the application. As far as our return policy is concerned, we accept returns of devices that were bought through our website or our official amazon shop. If you made a purchase through an indipendent vendor, you should contact them, or Amazon directly. Hope this was helpful !

Hello Matthew, your issue has been escalated to the engineers who designed the product, which is why it’s taking longer than usual. You can expect to be contacted by someone from Withings within the next 48 hours to try to resolve this issue. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

  • Juanpa74

Give it some hours and you well get a message that there is a software update for the monitor.
I was wondering the same and 5 hours after I had the monitor connected I got the update.

  • Juanpa74

Why withings doesn´t open their support forum for users of their products?
That way we could comment and share solutions to issues.

  • Erickbauman

I’m very interested in purchasing this device, but I’m a little alarmed at there are “in app” purchases to use this. Can you explain in detail what these extra costs are?

  • http://blog.withings.com/ Withings

Hello, the only case in which you will be asked to pay extra, is when you use the Smart Baby Monitor on two different networks (such as two different wi-fi connections or on 3G). This is due to the fact that in that case, your stream has to pass through the Withings’ server, which implies some extra expenses for us. You therefore have 15 daily minutes of free streaming in different networks and streaming will always be free when the SBM and your iOS device are connected to the same network. Also, you will always be able to monitor you baby with alerts and get an image of the baby’s room which is refreshed every 30 seconds wherever you are. The 15 minutes only concern the audio and video streaming. Don’t hesitate to contact us if you have more questions !

  • http://blog.withings.com/ Withings

We passed on your message and we will keep you posted. Thank you for your suggestion!

Hi, we are glad you like our product! Could you please write our customer service at this address contact-sup@withings.com and explain how your problem occurs? They will be happy to help you! Thank you very much for your suggestions !

  • http://blog.withings.com/ Withings

Exactly, when your baby monitor and your mobile device work on the same WiFi, your streaming will always be free. However, if they are working on different networks (i.e the SBM on one WiFi and your Smartphone on another, or your SBM on your home WiFi and your Smartphone on 3G), after 15 daily minutes of free streaming you will be asked to pay extra because your stream will have to pass through the Withings’ server. Alerts and images of the baby’s room that are refreshed every 30 seconds will always be free of charge, wherever you are! Hope that answers your question!

  • http://blog.withings.com/ Withings

Hello Trevor, could you send an e-mail to contact-mkt@withings.com? They’ll be able to provide you with more information regarding availability in Canada.

I’m also waiting for the Android App. I bought the baby monitor on the basis that it would be working for Android in March ( as I was told by Withings via the online contact service). My baby is due in 10 days now and I can’t use the baby monitor :(
I’m also really looking forward to getting the baby scale.
I also have the body scale and the blood pressure monitor and I’m delighted with them.

Hello Danne, we’re sorry to hear that you are having issues with our product. Our support team indicates that they received your ticket and have started exchanging with you to solve the issue, I hope they’ll be able to work it out.

  • http://blog.withings.com/ Withings

    Hello,
The process to solve this issue is detailed in our FAQ:

Change your FiOS router encryption mode from WEP to WPA:

    - Using your favorite web browser, go to the following address: http://192.168.1.1/

    - In the navigation panel, select “Wireless Settings”, then “Advanced Security Settings”

    - Select the “WPA” radio button, wait for the page to reload automatically

    - Copy the “pre-shared” key that is your new Wi-Fi key, then click “Apply”

If you need to, connect your Mac/PC over Wi-Fi using the new Wi-Fi key.
On your iPhone, connect to your Wi-Fi network using the new Wi-Fi key. Then, follow the Smart Baby Monitor set-up process detailed in the user manual.
In addition, the latest product firmware for the Smart Baby Monitor, that is being rolled out now, includes a fix for this issue.

  • sean

    Several needs -

    1) client for desktops as everyone has already mentioned.
    2) Noticed you have support for some products on Panasonic TVs – would be great to have the baby monitor supported too…
    3) Android App
    4) Privacy Mode… Now that I’ve allowed some relatives access, how to I restrict them? I would still like to have access all the time but be able to block others – maybe this is already possible. Some webcams actually have a privacy button which would be a nice addition to the device itself.
    5) Improve the zoom.. I have no choice but to keep it on the other side of the room :(

  • Nick514

Any update on a release date of an Android App for the Baby Monitor? If you do not have an official release date, do you have an approximate date, 1 month away or 3 months away ? thanks

  • http://blog.withings.com/ Withings

    Hello Sean,

Questions 1 and 3) We are working in making the Smart Baby Monitor compatible with other platforms, we will keep you posted for further updates.
    2) The Panasonic Viera Cast TV indeed supports the Withings scale. At this time unfortunately we don’t plan to add support for the Smart Baby Monitor for TVs (either Panasonic or other brands).
    4) At this time, there is no « privacy mode » for the Smart Baby Monitor. However, if you go to “Settings” à “Authorized accounts”, you can see the list of other account currently allowed to access the device and remove their access rights if you wish. You can’t suspend an account temporarily and reactivate it later remotely though. To be able to reconnect with the device, users whose account has been taken off in this way need to be in proximity of the baby monitor and to go through the Bluetooth pairing process again.
    5) We are sorry for your inconvenience. The Smart Baby Monitor’s zoom already makes a full use of the camera’s capabilities with a 4x enhancement of the image with no loss of quality. Unfortunately at this time this is the best quality that a camera of this size can achieve and there is very little room for improvement.

Thank you very much for your feedback and your interesting suggestions!

  • Cali

How do you add additional email address to your account so other devices can connect?

  • http://blog.withings.com/ Withings

    Hi Cali!

To connect several accounts to a Smart Baby Monitor:

There’s no built-in feature to address this usecase. However, we can manage to do it by following this process:
    - remove the WithBaby app
    - connect to your Smart Baby Monitor over Bluetooth
    - re-install WithBaby
    - set-up the product creating a new account (there are the credentials you’ll share with your friend/family).
    - From within, the WithBaby app, go to “Menu” > “Settings” > “My account” and connect to your personal account

Finally, you can share the credentials with your friends/family. FYI, you can remove their account by going to “Menu” > “Settings” > “Authorized accounts”.

  • John Garner

I sent you an email months ago asking when you expected the Android application, at the same time you announced its availability?
How come your system doesn’t work with the biggest smartphone market (Android 68%) months after you announced it would be?
You could at least announce a date. You don’t need me to tell you that missing the Christmas period would be a big mistake, because I and others will have to look for an alternative…!

  • Kevin

Recently purchased the Baby Monitor. Works great on the home network and via Bluetooth, however I have been unable to connect to the monitor on any other wireless connection other than the network that the monitor is actually connected to, or via 3G.

  • Had High Hopes

HI, I too am experiencing issues with my Withings Baby Monitor. I sent a request for assistance this morning but I still have not gotten a response. I sent the message below: ”
We purchased the withings Baby monitor from Amazon.com about two weeks ago. We are using it on an iPhone 4S with iOS6 over bluetooth. We have had an issue that is seriously making us thing about returning the item. The problem is that when my wife has her phone the app set to monitor continuously it closes with the message “Connection Error Unable to retrieve Smart Baby Monitor connection informations.” It has done this the past two nights. Imagine our surprise when we hear the baby screaming and see that the withings app is showing “Baby monitoring is disabled.” I am sure that connecting it directly to a wired LAN connection would probably help but this is not an option for us at this time. Would you please let us know how this issue can be corrected with some guarantee that it will never happen again.”

  • http://blog.withings.com/ Withings

Hi! I’ve made sure the Support Team answered your mail. Hope the problem is now fixed. If not, don’t hesitate to contact us again. Thank you for your patience.

  • Rk

It would be nice to access your iTunes library to play instead of the 5 lullabys that are already on the app

    Thanks

  • Tai

I am able to connect to the monitor from my home wifi network and blu tooth, but only sporadically from a wifi network outside of my home network. It also seems like the monitor loses the wifi connection from my house sporadically and I need to reconfigure. Can I connect to the monitor with my IPad from a second wifi network and/or cellular network? If yes, do I need to do any set up process? I have contacted customer service with no response that was helpful.

A privacy feature would be really nice. Also being able to restrict functions such as the lullaby or nightlight onto certain accounts would be nice as well. I’m also getting the video flipping between the infrared camera and pitch black as well, intermittently.

  • http://blog.withings.com/ Withings

Hi Paul! You can have as many Smart Baby Monitors as you want, connected to as many iDevices as you own. If you’d like to monitor several babies, you can perform that action by going to the tab “Settings” > “My baby monitor” from the WithBaby app. If you want to connect to a Smart Baby Monitor from different iPhone and iPad, launch the WithBaby app, then everything is automatic.

However, you cannot connect to several products at the same time, and see them on a split screen for instance. Thank you for your understanding.

Hi Antonio! Sorry to hear that. Please send an email to contact-sup@withings.com. Our Support Team will be happy to help you.

Any updates for a desktop app? It does’t take 10 months to create an OSX app.. For $250 you’d think this would be included. Even if you charge for the desktop version, whats another $15-20?

  • mike

I have a few friend, all of which have streaming issues. I’m guessing with more of an iPhone/router issue then with your product. It seems to stream much better when I’m at home using 4G vs connected to the wifi network for some reason. Do you recommend any specific routers for best compatibility? I just ordered an airport extreme in hopes that the iPhone 5 will play nice with its own router. As you know, apple is notorious for having terrible wifi compatibility with 3rd party routers. Hopefully this solves the problem.. but I’m usually lucky if I can get more than 5-10 seconds of streaming before the connection is lost.. close the app… reopen. Both iPhone 5 and 3gs same issues since updating to iOS6.

  • http://blog.withings.com/ Withings

Hi Mike! It’s in the pipes! Sorry if it takes a little time – we’re also working on other products and features. Thank you for your patience.

  • http://blog.withings.com/ Withings

Hi Mike! Sorry to hear that. The Smart Baby Monitor works perfectly with Apple’s Airport Extreme. Please contact us at contact-sup@withings.com so we can investigate this ASAP. Thank you for your patience.

  • Trevor Buehler

Hey Mike. I have an iPhone 5 and an Airport Extreme, working with the Withings Baby Monitor. The Extreme is a fantastic router, so great purchase there. I’ve never had an issue with wifi until I got my 5. The 5′s wifi seems to be very weak… I can watch the bars on the phone go down just by putting my hand over the top of the phone. Thankfully I was able to get the phone replaced, because I was having LTE issues as well. I only find the wifi on this 5 slightly better. I’m hoping Apple will come out with a fix for this problem, which seems to be wide-spread if you search around. I would say that the signal does seem to drop quite frequently, although it doesn’t fully disconnect. It’s not bad enough for me to not want to use the Smart Monitor. I love this thing. One of the best purchases we made for our daughter. Withings has a long way to go to make it really good (such as viewing online). But it works as advertised. If you have continued problems after getting your Extreme… well obviously the Extreme shouldn’t be the problem.

If you have continued problems after getting your Extreme… well obviously the Extreme shouldn’t be the problem.

Withings should list Airport Extreme as their recommended router. Since switching I’ve had flawless and incredibly impressive results. Zero lag, zero skipping. Amazing!! I’ve also picked up the airport express to extend the range (though i’ve not needed to connect in the house yet, its for yard/garage work during naps). Love this monitor, and I’m glad my issues were with the router. I used a netgear AND linksys with terrible results. I’ve read many many posts from people having issues with streaming. Get an airport and you’re in good shape!

I have the same problem when the light falls between the camera’s exposure settings. Seems the camera doesn’t know when to use color or infrared. Not the end of the world, but its annoying.

The monitor used to constantly skip while streaming, when using either wifi or 4g while connected to a very expensive Netgear dual band router. It would constantly go in and out. The monitor now works flawlessly hooked up to an Airport Extreme. Maybe its the extended range or Mac’s software.. who knows, but its good to know the issue wasn’t the monitor.

Hi Mike! The flashing problem can be fixed by making sure that the Smart Baby Monitor isn’t too close to a big white surface (otherwise when the camera switches to IR, the white surface will “flash” and the camera will think that a light has just been switched on), and is fully opened (otherwise the reflection on the device might be mistaken for a flash of light). Try different positions until the flickering stops. Thank you for your understanding.

My husband purchased this monitor in Sept ’12 and loved it… Until it broke. Mid December we suddenly got an error message, which i think said something like the port where you plug in the power cord is loose. We’ve been trying to contact withings to get a replacement monitor sent, or get contact info on where to send it to have it fixed and nobody has responded. We only had it for 3 months before it broke (mid Dec) and hoped that because it was such a pricey product, Withings would have a solution…or at least respond to our inquiries. Would you happen to have the info for a contact that would be able to help us with this issue? Thank you so much!

Hi Desmond! You can order one from Amazon.com and have it delivered in Singapore :) Thank you for your patience.

  • Chris Hale.

I find it upsetting that no ware on your site Apples or amazons site does it tell you that when you buy this monitor the over the Internet viewing is limited to 15 min a day. Only when we got it delivered did I read this on the box. This is one of the main reasons we bought. Not only that it appears you still don’t have a way to purchase more time.

  • http://blog.withings.com/ Withings

Hi Chris! Sorry for the inaccuracy of the box: you can use your Smart Baby Monitor as often and as long as you want, with no restriction. This is an old message that is no longer valid. Sorry again for the confusion. Thank you for your understanding.
