How can the Smart Baby Monitor see in the dark?

Have you ever wondered how the Smart Baby Monitor can see in the dark? Night vision cameras are fairly common nowadays, used for security or in some television programs, but the technology behind it is nonetheless fascinating.

Like most other commercial sensors equipped with night vision capabilities, the Smart Baby Monitor’s technology relies on near-infrared light. “Infrared light” is a sort of light invisible to the human eye that is located “beyond” the color red and near-infrared designates the type of infrared closest to that visible spectrum. In scientific terms, near-infrared light has a wavelength between approximately 2,500 and 750 nanometers. For reference, visible light extends from app. 760 nanometers to 380 nanometers (thank you Wikipedia).

Near-infrared comes mostly for the same sources as regular light: wherever there is visible light that humans can see, the invisible infrared light is almost always present and where there is no visible light, near-infrared light will be mostly absent as well. Therefore, in order to see in a dark room using infrared technology, we need to create an infrared light source first. Dedicated infrared LEDs placed near the camera turn on automatically when the sensor detects that the level of visible light in the room is very low.

Some cameras can take outdoor pictures using natural infrared light. It gives landscapes a strange, alien beauty that photographers sometime enhance further through post-processing. This picture is titled “The Fisherman” by Roie Galitz.

The LEDs light the room in near-infrared, like a regular light bulb would, except invisible to the human eye. This infrared light however is perceptible for the electronic eye of the camera that sends it back to the iOS device for you to see. The image is in black and white because colors as we know them simply don’t exist in infrared. The process is called “active infrared” and it explains, for instance, why you can see shadows on the WithBaby app’s display in what’s supposed to be a dark room.

Other night vision technologies also use infrared on different ranges of wavelength. Here is a picture of a dog taken using thermography, a method that relies on the infrared emitted by heat sources.

I have been emailing you guys for weeks now with absolutly no response. PLEASE answer my emails. I bought your product and it stopped working.

Each day I get a 000995 error and need to connect my computer via usb and sometimes that works but mostly not. Now the scale shows my weight then goes to a large wifi icon for 5 seconds then turns off. Usually the scale goes through the three stages: weight, fat and BMI. It doesn’t do that anymore. it’s close to the wifi and has new batteries.

I paid good money for this and would appreciate some help here. I noticed you guys took down the posting feature on your forums, and also noted 4 pages of folks having the same issues with NO replies from your team.

Please help me fix this expensive door stop,

    thank you

I got the baby monitor a month back and was having the connection issues other people have been talking about. I contacted the Withings customer support but didn’t get a reply. However the next day I seemed to get a patch to my iphone application and the system has been working ever since. After the trouble in the beginning monitor has been what I paid for. I suggest Withings people try to fix these problems beforehand to avoid negative feedback. However it is nice that your blog is still open for comments, even negative ones. This was the main reason I wrote to give heads up for the people having trouble. Openness for the win.

I just encountered a disturbing bug with the baby that it’s important for Withings (and everyone else) to know about.

Here’s what happens: If an alarm is set on the iPhone, the alarm goes off and not only can the alarm audio not be heard but (and here’s the bad part) the audio from the baby camera also stops. I have duplicated this issue on an iPhone 4 and 4S running iOS 5.11.

I am emailing this bug report in to customer support.

Hi, hos long dose the battery last with video (daytime) over wifi?

  • http://blog.withings.com/ Withings

Hello, when plugged, the Smart Baby Monitor has no autonomy limit. Once unplugged, the removable battery takes over so that you can move your product without interruption. Baby monitor autonomy can reach one hour when you are streaming audio/video and using alerts. When the device is closed, video turned off, the autonomy can now reach 2 hours. Hope our answer was helpful!

This monitor is less than a week old and I am now getting a “Your baby monitor is closed. Video streaming is off but you can still hear baby.” Please, please, please tell me there is a fix for this.

    Hi,

I’m having problems with my baby monitor. I can’t connect through wifi. But still receive the alerts through wifi. It still works when connected through Bluetooth.
I have send a message by email and one through the support form a couple of days back to try to get this problem solved. I haven’t received a response yet.
It used to work. And when only usable with bluetooth makes the baby monitor almost worthless.
    Could someone help me please.
