The new Withings app is coming soon to your smartphone

The Withings app hasn’t changed much since it was first released in 2009. The main addition since then has been the introduction of blood pressure data that accompanied the release of the blood pressure monitor, but otherwise we hardly touched the other aspects and after three years we felt the need to make a great overhaul of the application. We wanted not only to take advantage of the various feedbacks we received over the years, but also to introduce many new features that we hope you will enjoy.

We firmly believe that connected devices that enable and facilitate self-tracking can be a key to a healthier lifestyle. Our goal with this new version of the Withings app is to take it to the next level and make it the best portal available to check and analyze your body measurements and plan how you want to act with regards to those readings. In this post, we give you a glimpse into the future of the Withings app.

A brand new user interface

The first major change that we are introducing is in the look and feel of the app. As you can see in the image below, we opted for a smoother style, with lighter and more vivid colors. Like before, you will be able to zoom in or out on your graph at will to see the finer details of the evolution of your curves.

In the new Withings app, you will be able to visualize your curves in portrait as well as landscape mode.

Many new features

Beyond the aesthetic aspect, we are also introducing brand new ways for you to visualize and analyze your data. Innovative tools will enable you to get a full picture of your overall health with just a glance.

In the same spirit of making the app even more useful, we have increased the focus on goals and objectives. You will have new dedicated tools at your disposal to help you set your objectives and reach them. Among other things, and to fill requests we have received, you will be able to add a comment to any data point and we have also made it much easier to manually add a new entry.

With just a glance, the new Withings app will allow you to check the progress you have made toward your current objective and how much weight you still need to lose or gain to remain on track.

This post is just a first quick look at this new app, many other innovations and new features await you. Our goal with this new version is to make it even more useful, to enable you to better analyze and exploit your personal data while keeping it easy to use and nice to look at – two aspects we consider very important.

We expect the new app to come out in June, it will be released first on iPhone and iPad and then later on Android. Stay tuned for more news about this new Withings app!

    Two things:

    1) Please keep the graph from springboarding back when you get to the end, it shouldn’t coast backwards. (For either end.)

    2) Give the option of showing lean and fat mass in a stacked area chart (with maybe a line tracing overall weight to include days I put my socks on first). You can even include trend lines for each.

I see the screenshots show an iPhone. This isn’t IOS exclusive is it?

Hello Wayne, thank you for your message. We will pass on your message and keep you posted!

Hello Patrick, thank you for your kind words!
Concerning your question, our zoom adapts the scale automatically (like it does now), but you can emphasize gains and losses just by using the portrait mode instead of landscape. Thank you for your feedback!

Hi Nick! We are glad you like our new features! We haven’t yet decided which updates we will bring to the online dashboard as they may not all make sense in that context. We will keep you posted!

With Fitbit coming out with their scale and already having great software, I was curious to see whether Withings would update the apps (and the web dashboard of course). The Withings software has always left me wanting both design-wise and in terms of functionality — with the Android version really standing out as truly mediocre.

The new app for iOS looks great and I would really like to encourage you to release an equally polished Android app this time, one that respects the general UX and æsthetics of the platform instead of being a poor port from iOS. Finally, please don’t forget the web! Smartphone apps may be all the rage nowadays, but the web remains the most open, accessible and popular platform, most people can enjoy. The Withings web dashboard has been clunky, in my experience, but full featured, and I think it should get some redesign love too to match your new apps.

    Great work!

Hello cosmix, we will take all your suggestions into account for our future updates. Thank you for your valuable feedback!

    Hello Benjamin,
We do plan to update the web interface as well to match the look of the new app, although that will come later, after the release of the mobile application.

It’s now July, and I don’t see a new Withings app in the Canadian App Store. I’ll patiently await the update.

Although it’s too late for this update, one feature I would like to see (and on behalf of cardiac patients everywhere) is the ability to graph the Heart Rate either separately or concurrently on the blood pressure chart. The reason for this is that most cardiac patients are on both blood pressure and heart rate medications (ACE inhibitors and beta-blockers, respectively, e.g. perindopril and metoprolol). In order to evaluate the effectiveness of a beta-blocker, one needs to see the trend in heart rate. Right now, that can only be accomplished by inspecting each individual reading, which is very time consuming.

It might have been done already, but one very useful improvement would be to have the vertical axes always graduated in multiples of 10 or 20 mmHg, and weights in 5 kg or 10 lbs. That’s much easier to read than 70.1, 75.3, 80.4 kg (should be 70, 75, 80 kg – or 140, 150, 160 lb).

I have both the scale and the blood pressure monitor, and along with the Withings dashboard, they’re a great combination.

    Hello,
The app has been pushed back a couple of weeks, into July. We cannot give a precise date for release as it will depend on Apple’s validation process. We will keep you posted, thank you for your message

Android release date? I am holding off buying until I see a more capable app. The reviews in the Play store are truly revealing…

  • http://blog.withings.com/ Withings

Hello Peter, we can not communicate an exact date for the Android app release yet. We will keep you posted for further updates.

  • Joanne Allen

Hey! All of a sudden my weight isn’t showing up on my iPhone app. It shows on the website so I know the scale is working right. Any ideas?

  • http://blog.withings.com/ Withings

Hello Joanne, if your problem persists please contact our customer service at this address: contact-sup@withings.com. They will be happy to help you

  • Julian Berdych

Hi Joanne – as with any misbehaving iPhone app, try reinstalling it first. Tap and hold the Withings icon until it wiggles, tap the black “X” to delete it, then press the Home button. Now open the App Store, tap “Updates” at the bottom, tap “Purchased” at the top, then tap the WiScale app and tap Install to download and re-install it. You won’t lose any of your weight data, as it’s stored on the WiThings server, but you might have to re-enter your account info in the Configuration settings. Good luck!

  • Julian Berdych

Peter, if you’re not buying the scale because of the Android app, you should know that the scale works great with no app at all, just using the web interface on your PC. If you buy the scale now, you can start recording daily weight readings, and when the Android app is available, it will download your previous weight readings from your Withings website account.

the app needs the ability to store other information relative to a users need. I would like to track my glucose levels, currently i enter them in a Filemaker DB i made, having all my data in one app would be nice. Also caloric intake based on food and portion. Thanks for your concideration.

No news on the release date? Considering replacing my two years old Withings for a fitbit aria which rocks an amazing iOS app…

My faith on withings has been fading with the multiple delays of this app release…

  • http://blog.withings.com/ Withings
