Since October 14, users have been participating enthusiastically in the “Diabet’up, Bougeons contre le Diabète” Challenge. As today is World Diabetes Day, let’s see how they did.
On October 14, Withings and AstraZeneca issued a challenge: Fight against type 2 diabetes, a disease that is closely linked with sedentary behavior and excess weight. This challenge, “Diabet’up, Bougeons contre le Diabète” ends today, and we’ve been blown away by users’ performance. A great number of people rose to the challenge—Congratulations to all!
A Few Figures
- 3,215 people in 29 teams participated all around France
- Participants covered over 345,200 miles, equivalent to almost 14 times around the Earth
- Women rocked it! 58% of our Diabet’up participants were women
- Participants tallied an incredible amount of steps—457,731,133
And Now?
November 14 is World Diabetes Day. This day serves as a reminder that the fight to prevent, treat, and cure diabetes continues, as 5.3% of French people and 9.3% of Americans are affected by this illness The good news is that it’s possible to greatly reduce the risk of developing diabetes by moving more and eating better.
Thanks to your engagement and your steps, our partner in this challenge, AstraZeneca Laboratory, will make a donation to la Fédération Française des Diabétiques, which helps in the fight against diabetes.
Although the Diabet’Up challenge is over, the daily challenge to live a healthy life continues every day. Sleep, move and live better!
Discover our Partner, AstraZeneca
How do you think the 2016 Diabet’up Challenge went?
It is a real success for AstraZeneca! Our objective was to educate the public on the importance of getting active to stay in good health and and more specifically, to prevent the development of diabetes. In just one month, more than 3200 people (diabetics and non-diabetics) took part in the challenge all across France as a movement against diabetes. The engagement and participation rate completely surpassed our expectations!
Why did you choose Withings as a partner for this challenge?
For World Diabetes Day 2016, AstraZeneca wanted to create an innovative initiative, and as a growing connected health company, Withings seemed perfect. On the innovation front, the Health Mate application and Withings connected health devices allow us to track our daily step count in a fun way. Walking 10,000 steps per day is recommended, and thanks to the app, we quickly realise that it’s not always easy to hit this goal as part of the daily 9-to-5 workday routine! Being able to follow your step count throughout the day is very motivating: if you see that you’ve only done 3,000 steps by 6PM, you can adjust your journey home from work or plan an evening workout to make up for the sedentary day. What’s more, the ability to organize the challenge in partnership with Withings has allowed us to create a challenge that feels authentic—participants always want to walk more to help their team win!
What advice would you give us for staying in shape all year?
Activity is one of the key elements in staying healthy. We often think of going to the gym as the main way of exercising, but it’s possible to stay active on a regular basis without joining a health club. Walk to the grocery store instead of taking your car, get off the bus or Metro one stop early to finish your journey by foot, take your dog for a walk, do some gardening… there are countless simple ways to stay active every day!
